The Philosophy Boxes Method is a new approach to P4C designed for students in KS1, 2 & 3: it is graphically stimulating, engaging, and fun. This download is also suitable for older students: but the format was designed with younger students in mind. The topic of this Philosophy Boxes download is ‘Space, Space Exploration, Aliens & The Universe’. The download comprises a P4C lesson/session that can be used 2-3 times with the same group. The aim of Philosophy Boxes is to bring philosophy and critical thinking into every subject at every level: we believe that any subject becomes philosophy when students are asked the right questions and when they think about a topic hard enough and on the deepest (most fundamental) level. The Philosophy Boxes Method presents students with a set of ‘mystery boxes’, when a student selects one of the boxes they are presented with 1 of 21 discussion/debate activities [that use 1 of 8 different formats]. The presentation has integrated AfL so that teachers can test knowledge at any point in the lesson. There are 10 different AfL slides to choose from. The design is colourful, animated, fun and engaging: all activities require movement and teachers can decide whether students are expressing their ideas purely verbally or by using post-it notes. The nature of the design is that it can be used for short sessions (5-10 minutes) or much longer sessions (up to 2 hours!) - it allows for classroom practitioners to be flexible and adaptable. It can, therefore, be used in lessons or as a tutor-time activity. It can be use for self, peer or teacher assessment and includes target and correction setting. It is designed for 'tick-box' assessing so as to save the teacher time, with additional space for the student or teacher to write specific targets. As a Word document, it is easily customisable: if your class frequently struggle with one issue you can update the target setting box and it will save you having to write the same targets again and again.

This full CPD resource contains eight CPD training sessions: An Introduction to Metacognition & Self-Regulated Learning Teaching Activities & Strategies for Metacognition & Self-Regulated Learning Using Debates & Discussions for Metacognition & Self-Regulated Learning Subject-Specific & Departmental Metacognitive Strategies Growth Mindset, Self-Regulated Learning & Boosting Brain Power Skills for Learning, Metacognition & Self-Regulation Long-Term Strategies for Metacognition & Self-Regulation Metacognition & DIRT - Dedicated Improvement & Reflection Time Each session is designed to last for at least 2 hours: we wanted to include more than enough for 2 hour teacher training sessions so that those delivering the lessons can ‘cut their cloth accordingly’ and adapt resources and timings according to their will. The download comprises a FREE teacher training lesson/session that can be used 2-3 times with the same group or as a one-off. The aim of the session is to demonstrate techniques of structuring debates/discussions, inspiring P4C in classrooms, and fostering cross-curricular critical thinking. These activities are illustrated with reference to interesting debates about pedagogy, philosophy, ethics, the school, and teaching practice (most of which will be relevant to the teachers and trainee teachers (and other classroom practitioners) in your school. It is ideal for teacher training courses, or for ‘staff room morning training sessions’ that I know are often a feature of professional development in schools. It is offered freely so that teachers can see the ‘Philosophy Boxes’ method in action: mild ‘plugging’ of the availability of other PHILOSOPHY BOXES downloads (which you can find on TES for virtually every subject) is featured in the presentation. I hope that, if you like this teaching method, you don’t mind helping me sell a few more! :) The Philosophy Boxes Method presents students with a set of ‘mystery boxes’, when a student selects one of the boxes they are presented with 1 of 21 discussion/debate activities [that use 1 of 8 different formats]. The presentation has integrated AfL so that teachers can test knowledge at any point in the lesson. There are 10 different AfL slides to choose from. The design is colourful, animated, fun and engaging: all activities require movement and teachers can decide whether students are expressing their ideas purely verbally or by using post-it notes. The nature of the design is that it can be used for short sessions (5-10 minutes) or much longer sessions (up to 2 hours!) - it allows for classroom practitioners to be flexible and adaptable. It can, therefore, be used in lessons or as a tutor-time activity.
